Transport Infrastructure
Transport and infrastructure are sometimes likened to the arteries of society and as such are indispensable for the proper functioning thereof. Construction and operation of transport infrastructure have major consequences for spatial organisation and the environment, however. Its construction impacts directly on nature, landscape and heritage values, while its utilisation has an array of impacts, including noise nuisance and traffic emissions. Another issue is the unleashing of latent demand, with newly completed infrastructure engendering more and longer journeys.
In addition, there is the interaction between new development projects requiring better connections (access to new housing estates) and the improved connections initiated by spatial developments (construction of new business parks along motorways). These spatial developments (upscaling of production and logistics, dispersal of residential and working areas, increased travel times for recreational activities) are the driving force behind many of today’s trends in environmental burden.

Our expertise
Our work on this theme is focussed on the following areas:
- Continued development and improvement of know-how in the field (spatial planning - infrastructure - traffic volumes - environment).
- Development of methodologies to integrate the environment, in the broadest sense, into decision-making on infrastructure projects.
- Incorporation of environmental arguments in concrete infrastructure projects by carrying out Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) and Strategic Impact Statements (SEA).
Our clients
Over the past few years we have conducted numerous EIA and SEA studies in this field and advised and supported government agencies in drawing up SEAs.
