The Netherlands is the world’s second largest agricultural exporter, after the US, and the agro and food sector is one of the mainstays of the Dutch economy. The production of dairy and meat products, in particular, is a major contributor to climate change, because of the associated greenhouse gas emissions, not only in our own country but also in the countries where fodder is sourced. These activities account for 10% of Dutch carbon emissions, with other food-related activities accounting for a further 10%. There is plenty of scope for improvement: sustainable fodder produced with due respect for soils and biodiversity, more efficient processing, and logistics that minimise food spoilage.
