Maarten Afman MSc
With my technical and administrative background, I am involved in research and consultancy that provides clients insight into the technical, economic and environmental effects of alternative policy options and how best to compare them. My input to projects typically consists of technical know-how, quantitative data processing, analysis of feedstock and production chains, performing life cycle assessments (LCA) or calculating carbon footprints and model development, generally followed by writing reports and recommendations.
Much of the work I do is for the following sectors: ICT, energy, chemical and other industries, waste processing, the built environment and transport. The clients are industries, trade associations, ministries and NGOs.
Recent projects include:
Analysing state-of-the-art technologies for ultra-efficient new-build data centres, including model calculations of energy efficiency and costs.
Projecting the effects of potential reviews of the European Fuel Quality Directive: do requirements on lifecycle carbon footprints simply less tar-sand extraction in Canada?
Calculating a shadow price for phosphorus scarcity: if we close the phosphorus cycle and avoid wastage of this irreplaceable and crucial nutrient, how can this be characterised?
I have been working at CE Delft since late 2010. Prior to that I was employed at the Energy and industry section of Delft Technological University, where I conducted exploratory quantitative modelling studies on the effects of government interventions in complex infrastructure. At Delft TU I graduated in Systems Engineering, Policy Analysis & Management, building on previous experience in ICT and Applied Physics, also at Delft TU.
