Packaging deposit schemes

CE Delft has been closely involved in assessing the impacts of deposit/refund schemes for beverage packaging. We have carried out a number of studies on the policy options available for collecting packaging waste, examining economic and environmental aspects (climate, impacts, litter reduction) in both quantitative and qualitative terms.

In September 2017 the study Kosten en effecten van statiegeld op kleine flesjes en blikjes [Costs and impacts of deposits on small bottles and cans] was forwarded to the Dutch Parliament by the Ministry of Infrastructure & Environment. The study was reported on in various national media.

At the request of the Flemish Environment Ministry we also recently examined the costs and impacts of potential introduction of a deposit scheme on one-way beverage packaging in Flanders, collaborating for the project with Technum and SuMa Consulting. In this study a detailed assessment was made of the costs and impacts associated with several scenarios, with CE Delft responsible for the cost estimates.

We have good relations with the (financial) directors of deposit schemes in several countries, including Estonia, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Norway and Germany.

When it comes to identifying the defining characteristics of deposit schemes and their influence on costs, climate impacts and litter, we have unparalleled expertise.
