Environmental information on textiles

This report will be used as a reference work by Milieu Centraal for informing consumers on the environmental impact of textiles. At the heart of the report is a review of the environmental impacts of textile fibres, at the fabric level, and a ranking based on those impacts. A selection of fibre types is then discussed in more detail, for example because there are alternatives (e.g. bio-cotton versus conventional cotton) or because there is debate on environmental impact. Following discussion of the ranking and fibre types, three other topics are considered that are also of importance for textile environmental impacts, but relate to other phases of the textile supply chain:

  • the contribution of transport down the chain
  • recycling of textiles to produce new textile fibre
  • release of microfibres during laundry/drying.
