Options for regional allocation of renewable energy ambitions

In the Netherlands negotiations are currently underway to establish the contributions of individual sectors to national climate pledges. The stated ambitions of the electricity sector will inevitably mean a substantial expansion of renewable generating capacity. A crucial question is, of course: where is all this renewable capacity to be built? To gain a rough provisional impression of the scale of these aspirations and what they might imply for individual municipalities and regions, Greenpeace asked CE Delft to do the sums for three allocation methods. For each of these methods, this brief report provides an indication of how much onshore wind-power capacity and/or solar PV would have to be installed per municipality or region to successfully achieve the various levels of ambition.
